Simply put -- compassion is being respectful, sensitive, caring and considerate. As the national police force, the RCMP is expected to serve its clients in a caring and sensitive manner. It's more than just "warm and fuzzy" stuff. Being compassionate is demonstrating your sincere empathy for other people.

The RCMP provides a reliable, courteous and impartial police service. We must also show compassion when dealing with special needs and differences such as culture, sex, colour, beliefs, values and abilities. Canada is a multicultural society. The way we deal with others must reflect this and all of our actions and decisions should be made with this in mind.

"...they should show themselves in respect for Canadian values such as respect for diversity, respect for official languages or respect for other collective or individual rights."

John Tait, A Strong Foundation: CCMD Study Team on Public Service Values and Ethics. Dec. 1996. p 72.

Compassion is demonstrated through the use of coaching techniques, good listening skills, being tactful, taking appropriate action and being forgiving.
